RM15.2b to boost broadband service
According to NST post last month, the Malaysian government will sign a deal with Telekom Malaysia Bhd by this month to roll out high-speed broadband (HSBB) to selected parts of the country. They plan to pay RM15.2 billion infrastructure. Some excerpts from the post :
Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the RM15.2 billion infrastructure would spur economic growth further. The speed of Internet access will be improved up to 1,000 megabits per second for large users. Homes with a typical broadband speed of 1Mbps now could see this improve by tenfold.Shaziman said based on initial assessments, HSBB could improve Malaysia’s gross domestic product by RM6.68 billion or 1 per cent by 2010. He added it could also create 135,000 new jobs. The HSBB infrastructure would be developed over 10 years. It will be carried out in two phases. After signing the agreement, TM will have six months to plan the network and design, and call for tenders. “Once phase one is completed, the government will revaluate it to decide on phase two,” Shaziman said. However, Shaziman said the total cost to implement HSBB could be lower than the estimated RM15.2 billion because of open tenders.
What i can say from the announcement, it certainly bring some good news to our current slow streamyx connection, and maybe we can get faster speed instead of 512kbps and 1mb the majority of us is still using. Current fastest speed TMnet is offering is now 8Mb but its still in experimental stages and available on to selected small areas. Lets just hope that we can at last achieve the 8mb connection as stable and standard connection for home users.
On a side note, i don’t think those ‘open tenders’ that TM will be offering is really that ‘open’. Means maybe they usually will have ‘open’ golf session on weekends or a few karaoke session to decide who and how much percent everyone can get on these project. We Malaysians know that its the Malaysian business culture that always some politicians or businessman will get something into their pocket . Just look at the recent fuel hike, i’m sure somebody will benefit from that and get richer by tenfolds. While we, the ordinary Malaysian will suffer as cost of living goes up, and the only thing that stays the same all this while is our small salary every month. For this i THANK YOU Barisan Nasional for raising our ‘living standards’ but keeping our income low.
Now what kept me thinking is, if you want to be rich quick, internet marketing isn’t the way, just be a politician in Barisan Nasional party (sarcasm intended)
